The Rebels started their season with 8 new PRs (personal records) or raced faster than last year’s time.  Blake Brinkman cut 31 seconds off his PR from last year.  Three other runners lowering last years race times were:  Tyler Siegfried, Kaleb McDonald and Samantha Burkhart.  Others establishing new PRs were:  Layton Harvey, Kade Killian, Bowen Rand and Braxton DeWald.  Both the guys and girls teams ran well.  Nice start runners!

2015

The cross country teams competed in the State Qualifying meet at Hawarden.  To qualify for state you need to be in the top 15.  There were 119 girls and 138 guys racing.  Four runners peaked at the right time and ran a new PR; Natalie Killian, Samantha Burkhart and Tyler Siegfried.  All runners ran hard and competed well.  Every high school runner set and reset their PRs throughout the season, this shows how hard they have worked.  We say goodbye and good luck to 2 seniors:  Brandon Croghan and Paige Copple.  Congratulations on a great season.   Keep running!

The Western Valley Conference cross country meet was Sat. Oct 17 in Onawa.  Overall the Rebel runners performed very well; 3 medals, 3 ribbons and 4 new PR/season bests were achieved.  Medal winners were: Tyler Siegfried 9th, Brandon Croghan 13th and Samantha Burkhart 14th.  For the junior high, only the top 10 received ribbons.  Treyten Kooker finished 2nd, Bowen Rand 6th and Kade Killian 7th.  Natalie Killian trimmed 40 seconds for a new personal record, Brandon Croghan cut 38 sec. from his season best while both Braxton Dewald and Treyten K. lowered their PRs.  All other runners also ran well.  We also had 2 junior high runners running their second fastest pace per mile (and were close to their PR), ALL junior high runners ran their best 2 mile time of the year! (way to go runners!), while 4 other high school runners finished within 10 seconds of a PR.  All runners ran very competitively.  Congratulations on a great season junior high and best of luck Thurs to the high school runners at the State Qualifying meet at Hawarden.

It was a windy day at the OA-BCIG Invitational cross country meet.  Treyten Kooker was the only medalist coming in 12th.  Braxton Dewald lowered her personal best a little.  The high school athletes didn’t fare as well.  Brandon Croghan and Blake Brinkman had the closest times to their season best.  They are now gearing up for the conference meet Sat. at Onawa.  Good luck runners!

The cross country teams traveled to Hawarden on Thursday.  Six medals were brought home as well as 2 new PRs set.  Braxton Dewald cut the most (12 seconds) for her new PR followed by Kenzi Brinkman slicing 10 seconds off.  Medals were collected by Tyler Siegfried 5th, Brandon Croghan 13th, Sam Burkhart 4th, Kenzi B. 6th, Maddy Kafton 13th and Natalie Killian 14th.  The junior high athletes all ran well but finished out of the top 10.  All are very supportive of their fellow teammates not matter the grade level or place in the race.  Great job of representing Westwood!  Good luck Monday.

The cross country teams had a nice sunny day to compete at Kingsley.  The girls ran hard and competed well.  Sam Burkhart medaled coming in 12th.  Three guys set new PRs.  Blake Brinkman cut 29 seconds, Kaleb McDonald cut 25 while Tyler Siegfried cut 12 seconds grabbing the 8th place medal.  All runners ran very well.  Nice job and good luck Thur. as all runners compete at the West Sioux Invitational.

It was a great afternoon to run at the South Sioux City Invitational.  The sun was out with temp. in the 60s and no wind.  This helped 3 high school athletes set new season/personal PRs.  Another athlete was within a tenth of a second to hers.  There were 109 ladies in the race and 108 guys.  Kenzi Brinkman cut 10 seconds, Blake Brinkman 19 seconds and Tyler Siegfried cut 30 seconds.  All high school runners were within 36 seconds of their PRs.  The junior high had 132 runners in their race – all 6 that ran set new PRs!  Blaine Dietschy cut the most (45 sec.) followed by Brennan Kell (41 sec.),  Treyten Kooker (40 sec.), Bowen Rand (37 sec.), Dillion Hunter (33 sec.) and Kade Killian (14 sec).    Awesome job Rebel runners!

A very soggy course and light rain didn’t slow down the Westwood cross country teams.  A total of 5 new PRs (personal records) were set and the junior high brought home 6 medals.  Lowering their PR the most was Brennon Kell (58 seconds), followed by Natalie Killian (44 sec.), Blaine Dietschy (38 sec.), Maddy Kafton (32 sec.) and Kenzi Brinkman (7 sec.).  Medal winners for the junior high were:  Braxton Dewald 10th in the girls; Kade Killian 7th, Bowen Rand 11th, Treyten Kooker 13th, Blaine Dietschy 14th and Brennon Kell 15th.  Nice job by everyone!

Kaleb McDonald cut 1:42 off a longer course.  Both Kade K (3:32) and Braxton Dewald (1:27) for the junior high.  They run again Thur. at Mapleton.  Nice job teams!

The cross country team started their season off with the Heelan meet.  This will be the first time the girls will be running the same distance as the guys.  Everyone ran well, especially the freshman.  Top finishers were:  Tyler Siegfried, Brandon Croghan, Kenzi Brinkman and Maddy Kafton.  Great effort teams!
